Northern Vietnam with

Here live the descendants of dragons, speaking 50 dialects, growing and drinking coffee in large quantities, and using French baguettes for sandwiches. If you think that everything about Southeast Asia is already well-known, it's the perfect time to explore Vietnam, which will always find a way to surprise you.

According to legend, King Lac Long met the goddess Au Co, who at the time had taken the form of a bird as she was fleeing from a monster. Lac Long killed the monster, fell in love with the goddess, and she laid a hundred eggs, from which one hundred children were born. The father and mother each took fifty children and parted ways. Those who went into the mountains with Au Co became the Au Viet, who settled in northern Vietnam near the present-day border with China, while the group led by Lac Long became the Lac Viet, who spread out in the Red River Delta.
This legend, though a tale, hints at deeper truths. The merging of the ancient Laviet and Auviet tribal groups eventually gave rise to what, a couple of millennia later, would become the state of Vietnam. It could have followed Korea's path, splitting along the 17th parallel in the 20th century, but instead, Vietnam unified and began developing along Chinese lines, merging socialism with a market economy. Add to this the traditional lifestyle of the mountainous North, the European-style chic of Hanoi nestled between rivers, picturesque bays along the coast, rice terraces, and fishing villages, and you get the true Vietnam—unique, self-sufficient, and unlike any other.
